in 1879, where a sequence of English words change by one letter only
and are still correctly spelt - (also called Word Ladders or Word Chains).
The five handmade clay words - junk, gunk, guns, gums and gems are

Cemetery Memorial 2011
A mosaic tribute was created for a client's husband and ultimately for
herself, in a clever way to dress up the existing plaque while planning
for her own space in the future. We incorporated details relating to
their life on the farm, like animals and the harvester, as well as her
profession as a seamstress. All the children's names were surrounded
by handmade roses with little animal figures to add more significance.
Black Saturday Mural 2010
Fire affected students at the Redesdale Mia Mia PS contributed drawings
which were made into tiles, bordered by colourful vitreous glass and set
into a textured background landscape of the area - the road between the
two towns of Redesdale and Mia Mia and the famous bridge crossing the
Campaspe River. 33 of the 36 children were affected by the fires and
the black corners on their individual tiles signify their properties burnt.

Sculpture Event Oct 3 2010
Outdoor Art Kyneton (OAK) has been organised by Friends of Kyneton
Botanical Gardens to showcase the work of local sculptors. Official
opening at this inaugural event by Mayor Rob Guthrie at 11am, Sunday.
Regional Arts Victoria selected Kathryn to represent the state of Victoria
in the Outstanding Contribution Volunteer Awards for the time and
efforts devoted to the creation and project management of the AFTER
Black Saturday Memorial, positioned on the Kyneton Town Hall. The
ceremony was an exciting part of the concluding dinner at the Regional
Arts Australia Junction 2010 Conference and Festival held in Launceston.
This piece was submitted to the international online competition,
titled TIME on the Contemporary Mosaic Artists website, judged by
Martin Cheek. "Kathryn has set herself the challenge of portraying all of life's achievements and failures
in this one piece. At first glance I though I was looking at two interlocking rings - but further inspection shows it to
be a Mobius strip. The eternal tube DOES suggest biology / chemistry and indeed MATTER that makes up life itself,
especially if one imagines it slowly spinning around. I love the rich colours and the subtle gradations from green to
blue to purple and red to orange to yellow. This is such a clever and pleasing piece and answers the brief perfectly."
- Martin Cheek.
The generous $100 worth of mosaic materials was sponsored by
Maryland Mosaics, who sell an exciting array of creative supplies.
Made for the Daffodil and Arts Festival in Kyneton in September,
this project is also a demonstration piece for the MAANZ workshop
on pixellation on July 18th at the Hawthorn Community Space.
Using the smallest tiles in the world, 3mm handmade clay squares
in a range of tones, the image has been laid into a cd case on
plastic grid with some metallic highlights and height variations.
There are some millefiori stamens in the centre of the bloom.
Mosaic Torso Auction 2010
An annual initiative, 'Out of the Square' in the Macedon Ranges is

Cafe Colenso in Woodend is the venue for the auction on Sunday,
May 9th 2010. All artists are decorating a male or female torso.

Barfold Hall Memorial
Christine Nixon APM, Chair of the Victorian Reconstruction and Recovery
Authority (VBBRA) was in our area again to unveil a memorial at the
Barfold Hall on the 30th of March, 2010. The framed mosaic memorial
features donated fire affected articles from close neighbours set into black
and grey tiles. A descriptive central tile details other major fires in the
past that have threatened this lovely old hall. An impressive aerial photo
by Craig Robinson, taken in his father's light plane the morning after
Black Saturday depicts just how close the building came to ending its days.
Nine dramatic tiles capture the memories of a tragic day, with textural details
that remind one of the furious power of nature and how we are affected by it.

Program Exhibition held in the Castlemaine Art Gallery in 2008.
A full colour catalogue with photographs and artists' statements
was launched on the 24th of June, at the Castlemaine gallery.
As part of World Labyrinth Day Celebrations on May 2nd, this
paver and many others made in a community project, were on
display at the Phee Broadway Theatre, Castlemaine. Weekly
workshops were hosted by Castlemaine artists Vanessa Johnstone,
Diane Thompson and Lisa Mitchell, involving meditation, clay and
drawing exercises, before pavers were created by volunteers.
This paver will become part of the seating around a new labyrinth
to replace the old tennis court in the grounds of the Anglican
Church in Castlemaine. The gravel labyrinth will become an all-
access reflective space in a very creative and artistic community
that values its expression of an homogenous cultural diversity.

GUEST SPEAKER 2008
Kathryn spoke to the Friends of the Botanical Garden at their agm
in Kyneton on Wednesday, 27th April at St Paul's Church Hall.
An explanation was offered regarding the possibilities for using
ceramic tiles with text and images for information markers in the
proposed extension to the Botanic Gardens in the next few years.
Memorial Markers could be mosaiced using clay impressions of
leaves or cones, descriptive historical text with colourful photos
as well as the artist's fine art botanical illustrations of features.
This Wollemi Pine plaque was created for the historic discovery of
the species in New South Wales. Many transferred photos detail
its particular growth habits and clay glazed leaf pressings add an
extra tactile dimension to this botanically notable story.
